SOFT PISTACHIO NOUGAT - USES AND CONSUMPTION
Nougat is a typical sweet of the Christmas period, made in different regions of Italy and around the world, it varies in taste and tradition. Nougat dates back to more or less distant periods and its true origins are unknown. In Sicily, there are two different terminologies for soft pistachio nougat: cubbaita and giggiulena. These two terms would suggest that it was the Arabs who brought nougat to the Mediterranean basin, to Sicily, Spain and the rest of Italy.
Today, the most traditional nougat is made with honey and almonds, but, in Sicily, the most popular seems to be pistachio nougat. A soft, white bar of honey, egg white and green Sicilian pistachios give character and flavour to this typical Sicilian product. The ingredients are blended together after a long cooking process over low heat, the mixture is then placed on a frame, allowed to cool and cut, and finally covered with thin wafer sheets and packaged. A joy for your palate!
